    Greensboro Residency for Original Works

GROW (Greensboro Residency for Original Works), managed by Creative Greensboro, the city’s office of arts and
culture, is an open flex space for Guilford County-based creative individuals and organizations to produce new and original works that encourage visitation and engagement by the public.

The space is available at no charge by competitive review for residencies of one to four weeks. Creative Greensboro welcomes proposals from individuals, collaborative groups, or organizations with a history of producing and presenting creative programming. We are particularly interested in supporting residencies that are programmatically diverse when compared to other activities already occurring in the Greensboro Cultural Center and those that center the voices and experiences of communities of color, low-income communities, and or people who are disabled.

GROW is located on the second floor of the Greensboro Cultural Center, overlooking Davie Street. This central and prominent space is versatile and can be used for various mediums, multi-disciplinary projects, and intimate performances. We are excited to support a wide variety of creative projects through this residency program.

Burnaway’s monthly round up of calls, residencies, and contests for artists and writers.

    March 2021 Calls

Burnaway is an Atlanta-based digital magazine of contemporary art and criticism from the American South.

Since 2008, the magazine has brought vital critical dialogue to one of the most politically polarized, historically fraught, ecologically threatened, and economically disadvantaged parts of the United States. The issues facing Southern artists, institutions, curators, and writers often represent the country’s most pressing social and cultural challenges. Despite this, contemporary art in and from the region receives little national coverage or inclusion in major survey exhibitions, and even less internationally.

Through ESSAYS, ARTIST PROJECTS, EXHIBITION REVIEWS, and INTERVIEWS, Burnaway both documents and participates in the vibrant cultural landscape of the South today—from Appalachia to Miami, Nashville to New Orleans. Instead of relying on easy conventions or common wisdom, Burnaway continues to ask and wonder, What is the South?

In addition to its publishing activities, Burnaway annually hosts the Art Writing Incubator, a five-week intensive for emerging art writers and critics, and other public programs.

Inspired by Black Artists (7th-9th Grades)

Drawing inspiration from the works of Black artists such as Horace Pippin, Jacob Lawrence, Faith Ringgold, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, students will create their own pieces using similar techniques and styles. Campers will explore the stories and imagery in picture books illustrated by Black artists to develop their visual literacy and expand their sense of what’s possible with art and design.

This is one week in a series of related camps where students will have the opportunity to learn about the important contributions to the world these artists made and how their art serves as a way to teach others about cultural diversity.

Strengthen Your Portfolio 2: Beyond Portrait and Still Life

Wondering what else college admissions departments look for in portfolios? Here’s a hint: Portraits and still lifes are important, but you may need to increase the variety in your body of work. This week, you’ll focus on creating scenes and environments in your drawings and paintings - from landscapes to interior scenes, you’ll develop your skills in developing complex visual imagery. This week may very well set you apart from your peers applying to college in the visual arts.

All supplies are included, but students are welcome to bring their own sketchbooks or materials if they prefer to use them.  Materials will not be shared among students.

This is one in a series of three art intensives designed to strengthen the artist portfolio.  In order to register for any of these weeks, students must apply and submit a letter of recommendation from their art instructor.  Students accepted into the program will be provided a registration code so that they may register online.  The cost per week is $275.  Students may select to attend 1, 2, or 3 weeks if accepted.  This link is to apply only.

Please note this is a 4-day week (Tuesday through Friday) due to the Independence Day holiday.
