As part of our current exhibition, Woven into Our Fibers, exhibiting artist Jennifer Reis will host an in-person Mini Art Quilt workshop.
Spend the day exploring the infinite possibilities of using fabric, thread, beads and other embellishments to create your own Mini Art Quilt. Artist Jennifer Reis will lead a workshop on basic and advanced hand-worked art quilting techniques, teaching non-traditional methods of quilting, appliqué, embroidery and embellishing. Using techniques like raw appliqué, embroidery, and embellishing with shi-sha mirrors, beads and found objects, students will create an individually designed embellished textile mini artwork. All techniques are hand-worked, emphasizing non-traditional sewing and quilting, and is open to sewing novices and experts alike.
Jennifer A. Reis is a textile artist who creates intensively hand-worked, ornately beaded, and embellished paper doll icons on cloth using traditional and alternative materials. Her artistic practice has been honored with numerous awards and prizes, including Kentucky’s Al Smith Fellowship, national adjudicated and invitational exhibitions, and teaching opportunities at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, John C. Campbell Folk School, Craft Alliance Center of Art + Design, Cleveland Institute of Art, Society of Contemporary Craft, and the Southwest School of Art. Her teaching style focuses on collaborative creative making in a low competitive environment and former workshop participants describe her instructional approach as empathic, kind, supportive, and individualistic. She also has a production textile line of Indigo Shibori art to wear and homegoods and is currently represented by Troika Gallery in Floyd, VA. A graduate of Columbus College of Art and Design, Syracuse University, and Morehead State University, she has multiple degrees in studio art, arts management, and art education. Currently she is a professor at UNC-Greensboro, is on the Teaching Artist Roster of the Virginia Commission for the Arts, and resides in Martinsville, Virginia with her husband and an unruly pack of dogs and cats.

As part of the Woven into Our Fibers exhibition, exhibiting artist Sharron Parker will host an Introduction to Felting workshop.
Sharron will introduce participants to the history of felting and then guide us through a couple hands on projects to really get an idea of how felting works and what you can do with it.
All materials will be provided and no prior experience needed.
Ages 16+
Sharron Parker studied many textile techniques, both in college (including UNC-G graduate school) and at places like Penland and Arrowmont. When she saw 2,500-year-old felts from an archaeological dig in Siberia she was intrigued, tried felting, and has now worked in the medium for more than 40 years. Recent publications including her work are Fiber Art Now (Summer/Fall 2021) and Artistry in Fiber Vol. 1: Wall Art. Sharron's work has been exhibited throughout the US, in France, and through the Art in Embassies program, in Armenia and Turkmenistan.
