Open Calls for Art

We're your community arts connection.

At the CVA gallery, we work hard to provide opportunities for local artists in three primary ways. First, we curate and exhibit inclusive and engaging art exhibits featuring our area's local artists. We also solicit work from across the Southeast and nationally for periodic exhibitions intended to educate, inspire, and expose our community to facets of the art world in new ways. Finally, we save room in our yearly exhibition calendar for exhibits proposed by our visual artists and other creatives who may have dynamic, important work to show or amazing ideas for collaborations.

But wait, there's more! We also keep our eye on social media, print publications, and email newsletters from other arts organizations. We try to share as many opportunities as possible as widely as possible so that our community's artists have the chance to represent themselves in exhibitions both locally and nationally.

The Center for Visual Artists + Reconsidered Goods, will host “Trash Bash," a group sculpture competition using an array of reused materials in the CVA Gallery on August 2, 2024.  This is a First Friday FREE event, and visitors are welcome to watch the competition.

Teams of artists and makers will compete to build an installation sculpture working with reused materials from Reconsidered Goods. Five teams will be randomly selected to work on their collaborative site-specific installation under a time constraint (only 75 minutes), while spectators cheer them on. Each team will be assigned to a specific space in the gallery and receive a list of rules and a “trash kit” to work from – a panel of judges will select winners, each team receiving a one-of-a-kind Reconsidered Goods Reuse Trophy.

Trash Bash is a signature program of Reconsidered Goods, offered in partnership with organizations and businesses to promote environmental sustainability and encourage creative expression. The goal is to foster ingenuity, creativity, and invention, reconsidering how we think about discarded materials, art making, and creative potential.

Come hang out with us while these teams create their masterpieces. We will have a mobile make-n-take lab, music and refreshments available.
